Police have arrested four young men after a vandalism spree in the Wellington region last night.
The four Lower Hutt men were arrested last night after about 40 cars around Lower Hutt, Stokes Valley and Upper Hutt were damaged between 9pm yesterday and 1am today.
The four, whose ages were not given, allegedly used golf clubs to smash windows, tail lights, wing mirrors and body panels.
Sergeant Martin Todd said the group was picked up during "a routine patrol", intercepted on their way into town.
"One can only imagine what they were planning to get up to there."
The patrol officer saw shattered glass and golf clubs in the car and "made the connection".
Alcohol was not thought to be a factor in the incident, "just mindless stupidity", Mr Todd said.
The four are to appear in Wellington District Court on Friday, charged with wilful damage.
