Christchurch has been rattled by four aftershocks this afternoon, three of them in the space of 20 minutes.
A magnitude 3.7 quake was detected at 3.50pm.
It was centred 10 km east of Christchurch at a depth of 5 km.
Two other quakes, registering 3.1, hit at 3.29pm and 3.32pm.
A fourth quake was recorded at 5.29pm.
It was the strongest, measuring 3.8, located 20 km east of the city at a depth of 9 km.
