Subaru will launch its new Legacy sedan and wagon in New Zealand later this year, a range that heads upmarket and is longer and wider, offering more room and luggage space than the current line-up.
But the vehicles will differ slightly from the North American examples being unveiled at next week's New York motor show. The US-built Legacy pictured here will be available only in the United States and Canada, first to get the new-generation model when it goes on sale in June.
It shares similar design cues to the home-grown Japanese variants New Zealand and Australia will get in September but carries a slightly wider bodyshell to meet US requirements.
Subaru says the global Legacy range is built on an entirely new platform and comes with a variety of technical updates, including a continuously variable transmission (CVT) it calls Lineartronic, a new six-speed manual gearbox, revised four-cylinder boxer engines, plus a 3.6-litre six-cylinder unit for top-range models.
Subaru NZ managing director Graeme Woodlands said safety, performance, fuel economy and style were key ingredients in the new model.
"Combined with the high-quality engineering for which Subaru is renowned, the new Legacy represents a formidable package." Alastair Sloane
