Lance Phelps played his usual formidable game to comfortably win the senior division of the Martinborough Golf Championships for 2010.
This is Phelps' 12th win out of 13 club championships played and should really be accompanied by a laurel wreath at the very least.
A former team-mate of Michael Campbell for five years, Phelps originally played at Paraparaumu Golf Club, where he won 10 club championships there out of 11 played. With this incredible record of only two losses in 24 years it was an undoubted challenge for the canny Graham Jacobsen to overcome in this week's final.
The intermediate championship was won by Bill Jones over Terry Fraei, and Chris Rendle beat Tora Boyne in the junior division.
The plate matches were won by Bob Tosswill in the senior against Brent Keene; Darren O'Dwyer against John Taylor in the intermediate, and Shane Hartnell winning the junior from Terry Blacktop.
The women's championships are also under way and in the semifinals the big hitting Lisa-Marie Ireland beat Adele Cairns in the Silver division and will meet Jenny Boyne this week after her win against Jenny Wilkie in their semi. The bronze final will be between Rosie McLeod who beat Alice Forward, against Rosalee Thurston who beat Sylvia Beavis for her finals slot. The bronze B will be a good match, with Gretel Dick up against Marilyn McKenzie, beating Elaine Howe and Helen Kirk respectively.
In the plate, the silver finalists are Bindy McLeod against Diana Donald. The bronze will be contested by Gail Freeman and Gaye Didsbury while the bronze B plate finalists are Lyle Griffiths and Jenny Smith.
Shirley Rattray and Elizabeth Nicholls won their respective semifinals of the veterans division and will meet in the final, while the plate finalists are Margaret Norrish against Rose Sparks.
In the 9-Hole Championship, Carol Parkinson beat Karen Shaw and will meet Honor Clark in the final. Clark beat Jenny Tosswill in the semi, and the final looks likely to be a closely-fought match. Ann Renall and Jill Colton will contest the plate. The 9-holer B division final will be decided between Nita Edwards and Viv Malneek who won against Sherryl Howie in the other semi.
