A former social worker faces investigation over allegations of unethical and "inappropriate" behaviour with a teenage boy.
Child, Youth and Family southern regional director John Henderson said an internal investigation had been launched into the serious allegations of misconduct involving the former CYF worker.
The Nelson Mail said today it understood the social worker was a 36-year-old woman and the boy was a CYF client.
Mr Henderson would not discuss details of the allegations.
He said the staff member had been confronted by her manager about the allegations and told that an employment investigation would be launched, and she resigned immediately.
CYF had referred the matter to the police because it had "significant concerns" about the allegations.
Detective Senior Sergeant Wayne McCoy, of Nelson CIB, told the newspaper the police investigation concerned a former CYF staff member and a young person. He would not give a precise age.
Police received a complaint in June from CYF and no decision had yet been made over whether charges would be laid.
