A former Queenstown Lakes District councillor and lawyer has pleaded guilty to importing child pornography.
Wayne McKeague appeared in the Queenstown District Court this morning charged with two counts of importing objectionable material through the internet.
He will be sentenced this afternoon.
McKeague's lawyer says his client was under great stress at the time and has largely paid his dues through extensive and at times unfair publicity.
However, the prosecution asked the judge to use the case to send a clear message that New Zealanders do not want child pornography imported into their community.
