Former Ministry of Health chief nurse Mark Jones has been cleared of fraud.
The ministry launched a review of Dr Jones' expenditure after it was revealed he spend $1250 on a chartered yacht for a meeting with Australian nurse executives in the Bay of Islands in 2008.
The review found Dr Jones' use of ministry funds was "inappropriately authorised" and unwise, but not dishonest , The Dominion Post reported today.
Forty-five transactions totalling $140,999 were reviewed in detail but the ministry found "no evidence of fraud, deliberate misuse of funds, or personal financial gain".
Ministry chief executive Stephen McKernan yesterday issued to warning to his managers.
"Whenever you spend any ministry money, ask yourself how you would feel about explaining that expenditure to the nation," he said.
Dr Jones could not be contacted.
