Rick Ellis, a former chief executive of Television New Zealand, is returning to run the state-owned broadcaster.
His appointment was announced this afternoon by chairman designate Sir John Anderson.
Ellis was the chief executive before Ian Fraser was appointed four years ago
"Rick Ellis was the standout candidate," Sir John said.
"He is a very experienced chief executive, and in his four-year term with TVNZ to 2002 he led the company with vision and purpose."
He said Ellis was familiar with the issues facing TVNZ and the industry and was "ideally placed to lead the organisation and TVNZ can take firm steps into the future".
