Former Auckland Mayor Colin Kay has died.
Mr Kay was elected to the mayoralty in 1980 and served one term. He had a major stroke over a year ago and had been suffering health complications since.
Colin Kay received a CBE in 1990 for his services to sport, politics and community.
Mr Kay's son Tim, said his father was an active community member. He was the founder of the annual Round the Bays run in 1973 and represented New Zealand in athletics at the Empire Games in 1950.
Mayor John Banks offered Mr Kay's family condolences on behalf of Auckland City Council today.
"Colin Kay was a man that dedicated his life to public service and civic duty," said Mr Banks.
"He was a good man who worked tirelessly for many good causes and for a city he loved."
The Auckland City Town Hall flag is flying at half-mast as a mark of respect for Mr Kay.
