It's difficult to quibble with a 4-0 victory but Wairarapa United could have doubled their score and still been good value for their winning margin in their opening Capital Soccer premier division match with Kapiti Coast at Queen Elizabeth Park oval in Masterton yesterday.
Kapiti Coast did create two or three useful scoring chances late in the game but generally it was a case of Wairarapa United dominating possession and opening up a rather shaky opposition defence on a regular basis.
That the home team went to halftime just 1-0 up was poor reward for the number of times players like Soromon Seule, Pita Rabo and Waisake Sabutu got themselves into prime scoring positions but failed to convert that situation into goals on the board.
In fact, the only goal they did manage to score was from a goalkeeper's mistake rather than any impressive play on their own part, the 'keeper somehow managing to lose control of the ball after making a "soft" save in front of his own posts and Seule being quick to capitalise.
Part of the problem for Wairarapa United was that sometimes the ball carrier was inclined to be too clever for their own good with the likes of "clever" back heels too often ending up at the feet of opposing players.
It was entertaining but the end result was seldom fruitful.
The second half was very similar to the first with Wairarapa United always looking the more dangerous of the two sides in an attacking sense , only difference being that now they were much more efficient in their finishing work.
Seule added two further goals to bring up his hattrick and Merick Tvaroh also got himself on the scoresheet as they rammed home their territorial advantage.
It was appropriate that Seule and Tvaroh should be the scorers as they were the standout performers for a Wairarapa United team coming off the back of a history-making success in the Hilton Petone pre-season tournament and already being touted as strong contenders for the premier division title.
Seule, who has played at international level for Vanuatu, was an absolute handful for Kapiti Coast with his speed both on and off the ball while Tvaroh was a calming influence in midfield, linking well with his supports on attack and shirking nothing on defence. There was some good touches on attack too from Andy Robertson and Aaron Spierling and whenever Kapiti Coast did threaten the Wairarapa United goal the defensive capabilities of Petero Dauniseka, Carl Shailer and 'keeper Matt Borren ensured their efforts were in vain.
Full marks must be given those responsible for the preparation of the park oval which was in excellent condition for the long-awaited return of soccer there and a good-sized crowd was in attendance, especially considering the rain which fell through part of the first half and all of the second.
Wairarapa United will be back at the park oval next Sunday when they continue their premier division programme with a match against Tawa.
Forget the acrobatics, just give us more goals
