Forensic evidence collected from a stolen vehicle should help Taranaki police identify a man who fled from them on Saturday into the Uruti Bush.
The man, described as dangerous, was stopped by police using road spikes on the four-wheel-drive vehicle, but he escaped on foot into the bush, 35km north east of Waitara.
The pursuit started near Te Kuiti before police lost sight of the vehicle.
It was then picked up around Piopio where the chase continued.
The vehicle was believed to have been stolen from the Auckland area.
Senior Sergeant Geoff Ryan of Waitara police told NZPA forensic evidence collected from the car had been sent away for testing.
"We're fairly confident we will be able to establish his identity from that."
Mr Ryan said he hoped test results will be back by the end of next week.
Calls from the public have revealed the fugitive stayed overnight in the area, but Mr Ryan said they think he has left now.
"But we don't know how he left the Uruti area, or where he has gone."
The man is described as a European, aged 25-30 years, 1.87m tall with dark brown hair. He was wearing a light-coloured jacket and dark trousers.
He should not to be approached and anyone who sees him should call 111 immediately.
