KEY POINTS:
SYDNEY - Up to 600 people stand to lose their jobs if Ford goes ahead with a scheme to stop manufacturing the Falcon V6 engine.
The company is considering a plan to import V6 engines, which will comply with new Euro IV exhaust emissions laws to be phased in during the next three years, Australian motoring press have reported.
The Euro IV emissions exhaust standard will be compulsory for all new cars under 3.5 tonnes in Australia by 2010, and for all new model designs by next year.
A Ford spokeswoman said the company informed workers earlier this week it was studying a range of alternatives across the business, but said nothing had been decided.
Ford has been making the Falcon V6 engine at its plant in Geelong since 1926.
