A Masterton Swimming Club team, composed of 12 senior swimmers, 10 new development squad members and two from the Junior Squad, supported by their coaches and a large team of parents, attended the Manawatu Summer Championships last weekend.
The senior members had just come from a training camp in Rotorua over the New Year period, so high hopes were held for all participants. However, the onset of the cold southerly wind and rain during the first morning of the meet made conditions difficult at the open-air pool for the remainder of the meet.
Isaac Foote (15) led the way with five open titles and five second placings.
William Hamilton (13) improved his times in 11 out of 13 races by large margins.
George Sims (12) and Katherine Williams (12) were placed second in the boys and girls 11-12 100 fly respectively. Tara Field (14) was second in the Girls 13-14 100 backstroke. Taylah Mawson had a strong meet improving nine of her times and qualifying for Junior Nationals next month in the 100 and 200 metre breaststroke events.
Teysha Deal (10) won two gold medals in the Girls 10 and under 100 fly and 100 free and improved her times in 10 events. Emma Samuel medalled in the girls 10 and under 100 fly and did personal bests in six events; Jacob Smith in 11 events; Nick Smith in six and Sam Smith in three; Olivia Luff in two; Szaria Leitner in six; Petra Hall in eight; Asher Rayner in seven; Olivia Samuel in three and Hannah Ashwell in two.
