A human foot found on an Otago beach could have belonged to one of three soldiers killed when their unimog army truck plunged into the Kawarau River nearly two years ago, police say.
The grim discovery was made a by a visitor to Cromwell yesterday morning.
The right foot was inside a boot tangled in a pile of driftwood just off Old Cromwell town.
Senior Constable John Chalmers told the Otago Daily Times the foot probably belonged to one of the trio of soldiers.
Privates John David Partington, 17, Ashley Goodwin, 19, and Shane Ohlen, 21 who died when their unimog plunged about 70m into the Kawarau River at Kawarau Gorge on February 23, 2005.
The three bodies were found but one was missing a foot.
Mr Chambers said that the families of the men had been informed.
