Fond farewells for leaving councillors

Masterton District Council bid farewell to two of their councillors in the last meeting of the triennium.

Councillor Judith Callaghan and Deputy Mayor Jane Terpstra are not standing for the next council term and were thanked by Mayor Garry Daniell for their dedication to the community over the years.

Mr Daniell said over Mrs Callaghan's nine-year term councillors had come to "admire her pragmatic and no-nonsense advice".

He said her place in the Bideford community was extensive and included work with St Francis Church.

"She's the go-to person in that community.

"We know Judith will continue to contribute to our region and community and future council will continue to receive advice. We are grateful for your contribution."

Mrs Callaghan was presented with flowers and a gift, and thanked council staff for their hard work.

"I have had a great association with all of you ... thank you all for making my time enjoyable," she said.

She told the Times-Age yesterday that, after years of doing work for the community and having just turned 75 years old, it was time to do something for herself.

"I made up my mind when I stood last time that that was the last time.

"I think you can stay there too long. There's some of them [councillors] that have gone there as young people and are going to be old, pension age, when they leave."

Mr Daniell said he was extremely fortunate when Mrs Terpstra agreed to be his deputy six years ago.

"I have certainly appreciated her support and advice.

"Over her nine years as a councillor I note her involvement with Aratoi ... and many other organisations.

"I acknowledge her contribution with gratitude."

He then presented Mrs Terpstra with flowers and a gift as well, after which she gave a speech.

"Like Judith, I think first on my list is the acknowledgment of the staff. I've found them absolutely wonderful.

"My roots are really very established in the Wairarapa. I love the Wairarapa and it's been a privilege to be involved in this council and make a contribution to a place that's very special to me," Mrs Terpstra said.
