Actors young and old donned their uniforms and prepared to march for the station - following in the footsteps of our Wairarapa soldiers 100 years ago.
A dress rehearsal for Leaving for the Front, a reenactment of the first Wairarapa troops' departure from Masterton on August 13, 1914, took place on Friday, with the actors trying on the authentic World War I uniforms sourced by Masterton District Council.
Students from various Wairarapa secondary schools will play the troops in the reenactment, with established community actors playing majors, sergeants, captains, and the Mayor and Liberal MP of the day.
The event will involve speeches from the "Mayor" and "Mayoress" (played by Lyn Patterson) and performances from the Masterton Rotary Singers.
Leaving for the front will begin at 11.30 tomorrow morning at Masterton town square.
