Fog was preventing flights from landing at Christchurch International Airport this morning but outward flights were unaffected.
Airways Corporation supervisor at Christchurch, Aussie Malcolm, said the airport has been closed to landings since dawn.
Late night and early morning international arrivals were able to land before the fog descended, Mr Malcolm said.
"We still have flights taking off, there's no problem there, but once they've gone than there'll be no aircraft left," he said.
The airport was unable to say yet how many passengers had been delayed but there were long queues at check-in counters.
The fog cleared during the morning and an airport spokeswoman said flights were now clearing the airport. However, it would be a few hours before the backlog of delayed passengers cleared.
