KEY POINTS:
The fog that caused havoc at the Capital's airport earlier today has lifted and flights have begun to move in and out.
A Wellington Airport spokeswoman said the airlines began checking people in about 4.30pm and flights started leaving soon after.
She said the disruption caused by several hours of diversions and cancellations today had not been helped by similar problems at Auckland and Christchurch airports.
It was unclear how long it would take to clear the backlog but there was a curfew on international flights between 1am and 6am and on domestic flights from midnight, she said.
Earlier, Air NZ spokeswoman Hayley McCrystal said the fog had cancelled about 20 domestic 737 flights from Auckland, Hamilton, New Plymouth, Nelson, Blenheim, Christchurch, Timaru and Dunedin.
An international flight from Brisbane had also been cancelled.
