Fog at Wellington airport has lifted but it will probably take until tomorrow to clear the backlog of passengers.
Fog had grounded flights in and out of Wellington since 8pm yesterday, and has only just lifted this afternoon, airport spokesman Ian Pocock said.
The airport was waiting for aircraft to land before any could take off with the stranded passengers, Mr Pocock said.
He said "several hundred" passengers were waiting to leave the city.
"It will probably take until tomorrow to clear the backlog of people."
The stars of the movie King Kong are due to fly in tomorrow morning for tomorrow night's New Zealand premiere in Wellington, and are expected to arrive on time.
A Universal Pictures spokesman said travel arrangements were not affected by the fog.
