KEY POINTS:
Police are urging motorists to take care on lower North Island roads because of slips and surface flooding.
Inspector Paul Jermy of Police Central Communications said there was currently severe surface flooding on the Western Hutt Road, State Highway 2, in the northbound lanes between Normandale lights and Normandale. Signs had been put in place.
A slip was also partially blocking the northbound lane on State Highway 3 near Ratana, south of Wanganui, and police and roading contractors were on their way to assess it.
In Wellington there had been some severe surface flooding on Grays Road near Motukaraka Point - which will result in the road being closed.
Grays Road runs between State Highway 58 (Paekakariki Hill Road) and State Highway 1 at Plimmerton.
Contractors were currently on their way to close the road and put detours in place.
Police are urging motorists to drive to the conditions and monitor their following distances.
Earlier the MetService said the area around Mt Taranaki received 100mm of rain in the 24 hours to 6am, and 60mm fell in Milford Sound.
Lower Hutt received 26mm of rain between 4am and 6am today while further up the Hutt Valley the Wellington Racing Club's meeting at Trentham has been abandoned because of surface water on the track.
Yesterday heavy rain and flooding in Nelson caused sewage to overflow into the harbour.
Nelson City Council advised people not to swim or collect shellfish from within the Boulder Bank or at Tahunanui Beach until further notice.
