The Auckland family rescued from floodwaters near Wellsford are recovering well after their ordeal.
Karen Hattaway, her partner Jeff Brown and their two children - 4-month-old Benjamin and 3-year-old Vivian - were travelling along a flooded road early on Sunday when their car was washed away.
They escaped from the sinking vehicle but spent 10 terrifying minutes battling a strong current and trying to stay afloat before being rescued by people who saw their plight.
Yesterday, Ms Hattaway was busy trying to replace belongings lost in the submerged car. They included new carseats for the children, her bag, cellphone, wallet and credit cards.
Between appointments with the insurance company and a car rental firm, Ms Hattaway sought medical attention for cuts and scrapes to her legs, which were injured while she fought to hold baby Benjamin above her head in the flood water.
Benjamin, who had bronchitis and was being taken to the doctor when the car was swept away, was checked on Sunday night and is doing well.
Vivian is also recovering, but is sticking close to her mum.
The family were wet, cold and exhausted after being pulled from the water but do not appear to have any lasting injuries.
Mr Brown said on Sunday night that the family were grateful to the members of the public who helped them from the water.
The family hope to make contact with their rescuers to say thank you in person - once they have replaced their sodden car and have carseats for the children.
