The Cricket World Cup might have eluded his grasp, but Black Caps legend Stephen Fleming scored his main prize when he married long-time love Kelly Payne in a top-secret wedding on Wednesday.
The couple, understood to have signed a deal with a woman's magazine, went to great lengths to conceal details of the wedding. Guests weren't even told the location. Instead, invitations directed them to a pick-up point in Wellington, where the couple live.
Black Cap guests contacted by the Herald on Sunday said they'd been sworn to complete secrecy.
Fleming and Payne met in 2000, when she was working as a marketing assistant for National Bank, a major Black Caps sponsor. Fleming told a friend "it was pretty much all on from the first second".
They got engaged in 2004, and had daughter Tayla, now 16 months old.
It's been a roller-coaster year for the affable 34-year-old captain, dubbed 'everyone's Mum's favourite Black Cap'. He quit the helm of the one-day side after New Zealand's World Cup semi-final loss to Sri Lanka in April, saying he wanted to remain as test captain when New Zealand tour South Africa in October.
He's now concentrating on being a specialist batsman.
