Cross-country sporting excellence runs in the family for three brothers at Lakeview School.
Matariki Gemmell, 10, Taiawhio Gemmell, 11, and Tane Walker, 9, each won their age grade races at the school cross-country athletics day earlier this month.
The boys next competed as runners in their age grades at the Masterton Cluster Cross-Country meeting at Rathkeale College on June 13. They again finished well with Taiawhio placing fourth in the Year 7 race, Tane placing fifth in the Year 4 race, and Matariki, who fell during his race, finishing eighth.
Masterton mother Sarah Alexander said her boys had been involved in competitive school-grade running for several years and also played rugby for the Red Star club. The two younger brothers played in the same side.
"It was so cool when they each won their races at Lakeview and now Taiawhio and Tane are going to the regionals for the first time. They really are excited," she said.
