A 30km police chase on Wellington's main highway came to a grinding halt when a burst tyre forced the fleeing vehicle to go so slowly it eventually parked in a layby.
Five people are due to appear in court today facing a range of charges after the overnight chase, which started in Waikanae just before 1am during a routine traffic stop.
Waikanae police tried to pull over a car on Ngaio Rd but it sped up and tried to evade the officers.
A police spokesman said when officers signalled the car to stop it went even faster.
The fleeing car headed south on SH1's Kapiti Expressway followed by police before pulling into a layby near Plimmerton.
