A motorist evading the law drove towards a police officer deploying road spikes, then collided with a patrol car and allegedly ran off.
Police said a car in Christchurch failed to stop for officers about 5am in Shirley.
A pursuit began and an officer tried to put spikes on the road.
But the driver then drove towards the officer deploying the spikes, police said.
"The offender then collided with a parked police car before decamping from the vehicle. A police dog was used to locate the male driver who is facing a number of charges including failing to stop and unlawful taking of a motor vehicle," police said in a statement.
