KEY POINTS:
A Housing New Zealand flagship community renewal project has won a commendation from the Property Council New Zealand.
Talbot Park in Glen Innes won the top urban design award at the Property Council's annual prizegiving ceremony on Friday night.
The community renewal project, completed last year, involved removing and refurbishing 167 homes which were replaced with 219 new properties built to better fit the needs of those living there.
Housing Minister Maryan Street said at the outset the project had high crime and tenant turnover but now turnover was down from around 50 per cent to 5 per cent a year.
Talbot Park has also received the Australasian Housing Institute award for its contribution to community renewal practice; NZ Architects Institute award for apartment building design; and the Master Builders award for family housing.
Ms Street, at the opening of Kotuku and Talbot Parks on Saturday, said the challenge was for the corporation and the community to maintain and build on the successes demonstrated at Talbot Park.
The aim, she said, was to create more attractive neighbourhoods and open spaces, provide rental housing and home ownership opportunities, improve transport, education, and social and healthcare infrastructure in Tamaki.
