Shock and disbelief sum up the feelings at Viaduct Harbour in Auckland today.
Rocked by the news of Sir Peter Blake's death, the America's Cup syndicates have come together to mourn the loss of one of the world's best sailors.
As members of the public pay their respects to Blake at the Team New Zealand base, crew members from all syndicates are reminiscing about his life.
Many of the syndicates have opted not to sail today as a mark of respect while flags are being flown at half-mast.
Former TNZ skipper Russell Coutts was at the gym this morning when he was told the news.
"I'm shocked. Everyone is shocked," he said.
"He was a figure of world sailing. He was a great leader. He grew up in NZ sailing in the P-Class but he probably loved ocean racing best. It is a great loss for everyone."
Team New Zealand was planning to hold a private function at midday for families and friends, but members of the public were welcome to visit the base in Halsey Street throughout the day.
