The Herald's campaign to change the New Zealand flag has inspired plenty of people to try their hand at a new version. Even the Prime Minister has had a go. Today, some of the Herald's artists and designers present their ideas - but could you do better? Send flag designs to theflag@nzherald.co.nz and we'll publish the best daily, starting next week.

The concept of Aotearoa, The Land of The Long White Cloud, comes without political, social or brand baggage. It encourages the viewer to see New Zealand as if for the first time.
A green landmass in the form of a stylised koru motif, shrouded beneath a band of white cloud, all beneath a dark night sky studded with the stars of the Southern Cross.
Apologies to Gordon Walters.

GUY BODY, GRAPHIC ARTIST
This design combines Maori and British colours, thereby avoiding marginalising or negating either heritage.
The Southern Cross is retained for additional continuity and to symbolise the Pacific region. The flag is dissected by a stylised silver fern pointing forward and upward.

North Island and South Island, Maori and English, west and east coasts or the forest and the sea - these koru patterns are linked and complementary, highlighting our strength in duality. The addition of black with traditional Maori colours is acknowledgement of our long-standing love affair with black.

ROD EMMERSON, CARTOONIST
The Jandal is a symbol of New Zealand's carefree lifestyle. The "beach" feel captures the essence of where you will find Kiwis in their down time - and Tame Iti would never shoot holes in it. It could also double as a beach towel, lava-lava or prayer mat.
