Five young men arrested over alleged illegal street racing in Wellington

Five drivers have been arrested and their cars impounded for alleged illegal street racing in Wellington, police say.

Police were alerted to a group of five cars allegedly driving at high speed around the coastal roads of the Mirimar Peninsula on Sunday.

Officers tracked down the suspected drivers.

Five young Wellington men, aged between 17 and 21, will next appear at Wellington District Court on October 23 facing a number of driving related charges.

It comes a fortnight after two vehicles on State Highway 2 were allegedly caught driving at more than 200km/h.

"Once again a group of drivers have risked their lives, and those of the public, in the pursuit of high speed driving," said constable Laurence Vautier of the Wellington District Road Policing Group.

"Police impounded all five vehicles for 28 days and the matter is now before the courts, where the drivers can explain their action to a Judge."

Police are appealing for witnesses who may have seen the vehicles in Shelly Bay, Point Howard and Scorching Bay on Sunday evening and to contact Mr Vautier on 04 381 2000.

One vehicle was described as a blue coloured sedan with white bumpers.

Another was described as a red coloured coupe.
