Five people died in road accidents over the weekend, including a preschool child trapped when a car plunged into the Whanganui River yesterday.
The child, thought by police to be aged 2 or 3, was one of five passengers in a white Subaru which crashed into the river off Anzac Parade. A woman also died.
A 27-year-old man died yesterday after being hit by a north-bound van as he walked along State Highway 1 north of Waikanae.
Last night a 58-year-old motorcyclist died after crashing on the Rimutaka Hill, north of Wellington.
Another person died on Friday evening in Parnassus, in north Canterbury, after a car crashed down a hill off SH1.
