Search and rescue teams in Nelson are looking for five young men who have not been seen since early today after their vehicle broke down.
A motorist reported towing the men in their "reddish" station wagon to the top of the Whangamoa Saddle on State Highway 6, 29km north-east of Nelson, just after midnight, Sergeant Mike Fitzsimmons said.
The group intended to coast down the hill before continuing the tow to Nelson but were not seen again.
Mr Fitzsimmons said police were concerned the car may have crashed.
Search and rescue teams, along with the fire service and the Nelson-Marlborough rescue helicopter, searched the area overnight and will continue the search today.
