KEY POINTS:
Five people have been injured, one critically, after a crash between train and a car south of Auckland.
Children are among the injured.
The car collided with the train in Paerata, north of Pukekohe around 4.20pm.
The Westpac Rescue Helicopter is taking the critically injured child to Starship, and a seriously injured adult to Auckland Hospital.
An ambulance spokesman says two more people, one with serious and one with moderate injuries, are being driven to Middlemore Hospital - while a fifth is still at the scene.
He says at this stage they are not sure how many of the injured are children.
Police said the crash happened at Paerata, near Pukekohe, soon after 4pm.
A Fire Service spokesman told NZPA initial indications were that somebody died in the crash, "but that has been rescinded".
Police say Crown Road has been blocked to traffic but State Highway 22 is open.
