Five car smash closes SH1 in Northland

A five car collision north of Wellsford in Northland has led to State Highway 1 being closed.

The accident happened about 1.40pm today.

Southbound traffic is being diverted at Kaiwaka along the Kaiwaka Mangawhai road. North bound traffic is diverted along the Mangawhai road just north of Te hana township.

The diversions would stay in place for some time, police said. Transit was providing signage to assist with diversions.

The Westpac rescue helicopter responded along with fire, ambulance and police.

Four people had serious injuries with another two having less serious injuries.

Motorists were advised to delay travel or use alternate roads.
