KEY POINTS:
Five people have been arrested after a high speed police chase through the Waikato overnight.
The chase began about 12.15am when police spotted a stolen Subaru vehicle in Cambridge, Senior Sergeant Kari Thornton said.
The occupants of the car threw items out of the car while it was speeding towards Te Awamutu at speeds reaching 165kmh, Ms Thornton said.
The car ran over road spikes, but was able to make it to Temple View, 7km south west of Hamilton, on it's rims before police stopped it about 1am.
The stolen car, as well as several police cars, were damaged during the chase, Ms Thornton said.
The men and two women aged between 17 and 21-years-old have been charged with stealing a vehicle, unlawfully getting into a vehicle, assault on police, criminal nuisance and wilful damage.
They will appear in Hamilton District Court tomorrow.
