Three men made it to safety after a fishing boat ran aground at Greymouth last night, police said.
The boat, a locally based wooden fishing vessel called Venture, became stuck on the Greymouth bar in the Grey River about 11pm and began breaking up overnight, Sergeant David Cross said.
The men made their own way to the beach before police were called. Maritime New Zealand was investigating the cause of the grounding.
