KEY POINTS:
Police say a Northland man injured on Sunday was hit in the head with a fishing spear and not a crossbow bolt as first thought.
The spear hit the 29-year-old through an open car window during an argument near Tutukaka, northeast of Whangarei.
The man was just about to drive away when he was struck.
Detective Sergeant Steven Simpkin of Whangarei police said yesterday that an arrest was likely once police had spoken to passengers of the other car involved.
On Wednesday police said they were talking to the driver.
Mr Simpkin said the driver had helped police and they had established that the weapon used was a flounder spear.
He said the stainless-steel spear, reportedly less than 1m in length, had not been found.
The injured man, who did not know the people in the other car, is recovering in Auckland City Hospital.
