One fisherman is dead and another has been treated for hypothermia after their small boat capsized and sank off Omana Beach in Auckland's Hauraki Gulf early today.
Senior Sergeant Peter Raynes of Counties Manukau said police were told around 1.15am that a small boat had capsized and sunk approximately 200 metres off Omana Beach.
The two men on board attempted to swim to shore, one of them made it and raised the alarm.
Police, Coast Guard and the Westpac Helicopter mounted a search and at about 5am the body of the second man was found about 50 metres from the submerged boat.
Neither man was wearing a life jacket.
