Works by New Zealand artists C F Goldie and Colin McCahon are to go under the virtual hammer in New Zealand's first dedicated online fine arts auction.
The auction starting on Thursday at 4pm also includes works by Bill Hammond, Annie Baird, Charles Blomfield, Doris Lusk, Michael Smither and Peter McIntyre.
Fishers Fine Arts managing director, John Fisher said the market seems ready for the online auctions with the halving of the selling commission to 5 per cent being part of the attraction as well as the comfort of doing it all from home.
"People need to go to a lot of trouble to participate in traditional art auctions whether they are buyers or sellers," Mr Fisher said.
"For sellers especially, there is the issue of getting your work to the auction house, insuring it, packaging and freight. With us, your artwork does not leave your wall until it is confirmed sold."
Mr Fisher said they have been overwhelmed by the quality of artworks that have been put up for sale.
"We were planning a two-week cycle of auctions, each with around ten or more entries of quality New Zealand artworks -- our first auction will include 29 works which illustrates the depth of what has been offered to us."
