The first ever Police Association Bravery Award will be presented by Prime Minister John Key today.
It's being awarded to Eastern Districts Police Inspector Mike O'Leary - who was off duty, travelling with his family when he witnessed a horrendous car crash near Taupo in April last year.
He risked his own life and suffered severe burns to his hand and arms, to save two children trapped in a burning vehicle involved in the triple-car smash.
The Police Association says Inspector O'Leary's actions demonstrated extraordinary bravery, above and beyond all reasonable expectations of a police officer performing his duty.
