KEY POINTS:
With Guy Fawkes just days away - Wednesday - fireworks enthusiasts are out stocking up to celebrate.
Today is the first day that vendors can legally sell fireworks.
After a slow start, Mad Lion Fireworks on Hobson Street in Auckland has been busy this afternoon.
Manager Vina Dionisoio says they will be selling over one hundred different kinds of fireworks over the next three days.
She says sparklers and value packs are the hot ticket items for Guy Fawkes.
While some are willing to splurge on the explosives, others are scaling back and being a little more money conscious this year.
Emergency services are stressing the importance of fireworks safety. New restrictions on fireworks were introduced last season. These led to a drop in injuries and damage to property.
Scott Sargentina of the Fire Service says if people are safe, a further reduction in injuries and damage is possible this year.
He says those using fireworks should keep a bucket of water close by, children at a distance and should not try to re-light ones that do not work.
Mr Sargentina also says burns should be held under cold running water for at least ten minutes.
