Suspicious fires have destroyed two homes in the South Island overnight.
A police scene guard is in place following the fire in the unoccupied house just north of Saltwater Creek in North Canterbury.
It took firefighters nearly three hours to put out the blaze which is being investigated by the police.
The other fire was over the Southern Alps in Cobden, near Greymouth.
A derelict house was destroyed by fire just after 7pm - police and fire safety are investigating.
