Firefighters were called to a large blaze at a tow-bar and automotive accessories factory in Wiri tonight.
They were alerted to the fire at the Best Bars plant in Bolderwood Place at 6.20pm.
A witness said "quite a lot of smoke" was pouring out and bystanders were warned to stay well away as it might have been toxic.
The blaze had been contained sufficiently by 8pm for firefighters to enter the plant. Late last night, it was unclear what had caused the blaze or whether chemicals were involved.
But the Fire Service took no chances. It sent specialist units for dealing with hazardous materials - the witness said there were three - as well as nine fire trucks.
