An Otago gully has been in flames since 10pm this evening.
A fire service spokesman said they got multiple calls alerting them to the blaze north east of Milton. It's fire front is 200m long.
Four crews are currently there, two more are responding and a rural fire officer will soon take over.
The spokesman understood the fire was burning in "wind rows" - dry tinder left over after a forestry area has been milled. He said it is contained in a gully.
"Every fire reacts differently under the conditions."
