Firefighters are fortunate to have escaped without injury when a large silo collapsed during a fire at a Far North wood mill last night.
The Fire Service was called to the blaze at the Juken New Zealand Triboard Mill on Whangatane Drive, Kaitaia, at about 10.40pm.
Firefighters used a "high-volume water attack" on the fire, which appeared to have started in roof ducting, Fire Service northern communications centre shift manager Dallas Ramsay said.
Several firefighters were knocked to the ground when a large silo collapsed, but none was injured.
The fire was declared out at 3am, but crews remained on-site overnight to monitor for reignition.
