KEY POINTS:
Christchurch firefighters are still at a paper recycling plant dampening down hot spots, 24 hours after the fire began.
The blaze started yesterday morning when bales of tightly compressed, stacked paper two storeys high and covering an area half the size of a rugby field, caught on fire.
Christchurch chief fire officer Dan Coward said a crew was likely to be at the site for the rest of the day, dampening down hotspots.
He said fire fighters were sometimes having to move six or seven bales of paper to get to the hot spots and it was a lengthy process.
Emergency services were called to the Buchanans Road site in Hornby just after 9am yesterday.
Five fire appliances and 26 firefighters were on site for much of the day.
