Christchurch firefighters are this morning dampening down hotspots and turning over debris after a large house fire in the suburb of Avonside overnight.
Six fire appliances were called to the two-storey house on the corner of Avonside Drive and Linwood Avenue shortly before 4am, southern fire communications shift manager Andrew Norris said.
The fire was out by 5.30am but three fire crews remained on site, he said.
The house, believed to be known as Avonside Manor, had been abandoned due to earthquake damage.
Mr Norris said firefighters had been unable to determine the cause of the blaze and fire safety officers would begin an investigation later today.
