Firefighters in gas suits are cleaning up more than 600 litres of hydrogen peroxide that spilled in Hamilton this morning.
They were called to the spill at the Ecolab plant in Te Rapa, in northern Hamilton, about 9.50am, Fire Service northern communications shift manager Steve Smith said.
"They located 620 litres that have been spilled. The fumes that they're giving off are dangerous, so they've evacuated that building," he told NZPA.
The spill had been safely contained while crews from seven fire engines worked to clean up the chemicals.
It was not yet known what called the spill.
