KEY POINTS:
Firefighters are battling a major blaze in a commercial building in the Southern Wairarapa town of Carterton.
Wellington fire communications centre shift manager Murray Dunbar said the fire was in a workshop on the outskirts of town in a building believed to contain various types of vehicles.
It was unclear what else was in the workshop but hazardous materials were an inherent problem in commercial buildings, Mr Dunbar said.
The fire service were called to the blaze at 12.15pm.
Almost three hours later the crews of nine appliances were still fighting to contain the 50m by 50m fire.
It was unclear if anyone was in the building when the fire started, Mr Dunbar said.
"There may well have been, but that [information] has not been passed on yet," he said.
Specialist units from Wellington as well as appliances from the greater Wairarapa area were called in fight the blaze.
