A second fire has broken out in Wanganui this morning after firefighters extinguished the initial blaze at Scrap Metal Wanganui's Castlecliff yard.
The fire service was called out to the initial Rodgers Street blaze about 9.30 and worked for an hour to put it out.
However, a second blaze 200 metres away ignited about 10.45am.
Black acrid smoke from burning tyres in the used car scrap metal yard covered much of the industrial area of the Castlecliff suburb and the black plume was seen as far away as Maxwell, 25km west of the city.
Two teams from the Wanganui Fire Service battled through the smoke in extremely hot conditions before the first fire was brought under control.
