KEY POINTS:
Firefighters are today fighting a chemical fire in Lower Hutt.
A police communications spokeswoman said six fire appliances along with other specialist equipment were fighting the fire, which broke out about midday.
Several roads in the area had been closed including Wainuiomata Hill Road, Seaview Road at Port Road, Waione Street and Bell Road.
Police advised all traffic to attempt to avoid these areas because delays were inevitable.
